What Families Have Said
Siriporn Phataraphan
Sukhumvit, Bangkok
"My mother and I have always struggled to talk about family history without it becoming a bit fraught. The workshop gave us a structure that felt less personal and more like an exercise β which, oddly, made it easier to actually say things that matter. I did not expect to find it useful, but I did."

David Marchetti
Ekkamai, Bangkok
"We did the records organising with James across three Saturday mornings. He was methodical and patient. The folder we ended up with is genuinely something we will keep β not just a nice idea but a useful object. My only wish is that we had started with better copies of some old photographs, but that is on us."

"The Generations Membership was something my husband and I joined a bit on impulse after attending the one-day workshop. Eight months in, we have attended every monthly session and used several of the templates. The peer community is quiet but warm β people share at their own pace and nobody is pushed."

"I came looking for something that might help me and my teenage son talk about our family history β particularly the parts he has shown no interest in. Nantawan was clear from the start that this was not counselling, which actually made me relax. Two months on, he has asked to see the folder we started making."

Emma Hartley
Sathorn, Bangkok
"As an expat with a Thai partner and a mixed family, I was not sure a workshop would translate well to our situation. The Familiae team clearly thought about this β the session did not assume a Thai or Western model. The listening exercises were genuinely adaptable. Worth attending."

Wichai Charoenwong
Bang Na, Bangkok
"Three generations of my family attended the conversation workshop β my parents, my wife and me, and two of our adult children. Getting everyone to sit still long enough was the hard part. Once the session started, the facilitator handled the different generations very well. We left with more than we expected."

Three Families, Three Paths
A closer look at how different families arrived at Familiae and what they found at the end of each activity.
A Multi-Generational Thai-Japanese Household
Records Organising Β· 3 sessions over 6 weeks
The Starting Point
Two boxes of documents in Thai and Japanese, a collection of photographs with no labels, and a grandmother with a strong memory but no record to back it up. The family had been meaning to organise these materials for three years.
What Happened
James worked with the family over three Saturday sessions to sort, label, and structure the materials into a bilingual reference folder. The grandmother's recollections were recorded as handwritten notes and added to the relevant sections.
The Outcome
A completed folder covering four generations, with 74 organised photographs and 12 pages of family notes. The family signed up for the Membership the following month to continue using templates.
"We had the materials. James gave us the structure. The folder we produced is the first time any of this has been in one place."
An Expatriate Family Preparing for a Move Home
Conversation Workshop Β· Single half-day session
The Starting Point
A British family who had been in Bangkok for eight years and were returning to the UK. Two teenage children who had grown up largely in Thailand. The parents wanted a way to mark the transition and hear what the experience had meant to each family member.
What Happened
The family attended the half-day workshop focused on shared memory and story-telling. Nantawan used a structured sequence of prompts that allowed each person to speak without interruption. A collective timeline of Bangkok memories was built during the session.
The Outcome
Each family member left with personal notes from the session. The parents described it as useful and meaningful. One of the children asked whether they could attend another session before the move β which the family arranged.
"The workshop gave us a reason to sit still and listen to each other for three hours. That does not happen often enough in our family."
A Family Who Joined the Membership After Losing an Elder
Generations Membership Β· 10 months ongoing
The Starting Point
After losing the family's grandmother β the keeper of most of the family's oral history β an adult daughter realised large sections of that history would be lost. She was looking for a community, not advice, and was cautious about spaces that blurred those lines.
What Happened
She joined the Generations Membership and began using the story templates to record what she remembered from her grandmother's accounts. She attended four monthly workshops and found others in the community working through similar projects.
The Outcome
Over ten months she completed twelve pages of recorded family stories using the membership templates. She brought her brother to two workshops. The community aspect, she said, was an unexpected source of motivation β not support in a clinical sense, but solidarity.
"I needed a place where people understood the project without needing to understand my grief. That is exactly what the Membership gave me."
